The malfunction that has prevented more than nine million Libero and Virgilio accounts , in Italy, from sending and receiving emails is being resolved (we explain what happened here and how to complain here). After four days of downtime, the situation is slowly returning to normal. , assured the company Italiaonline which is in charge of the infrastructure of both e-mail services. The case is exceptional , due to the long duration of the problem, not unique . Over the years we have witnessed disservices on all the major mail services that we use on a daily basis. It happened to Gmail , in 2020, but also as far back as 2013. It also happened to Outlook , Microsoft’s service, also in 2020. And again at Yahoo in 2019, to name the most widely used. Malfunctions happen, especially in such large infrastructures: all it takes is a bug in the operating system , as happened to Libero and Virgilio, to bring the entire system to a halt. Is there any way to prevent collateral damage? To avoid being offline for hours, if not days as in this case?
